Epigenetics to understand and prevent childhood obesity (Luigi Bouchard Research Team – University of Sherbrooke/Chicoutimi)

Obesity affects 1 in 5 children in Canada who are at high risk of becoming obese until adulthood. The fetus is exposed to various factors during pregnancy, such as an excess of sugar caused by maternal diabetes, which play an important role in the development of childhood obesity. The biological mechanisms involved are however still unknown. Professor Bouchard and his team are working to elucidate them through their research on epigenetic mechanisms and childhood obesity. They work to identify pregnancy-modifying epigenetic markers that predict childhood obesity and to develop new epigenetic tools for screening and early diagnosis of pregnancy diabetes. Their work could help prevent pregnancy diabetes and its consequences such as childhood obesity.
